Scientific research has shown that simply by following our strengths, we can gain wisdom and perspective in our lives, generate optimism, confidence, and even increase our sense of vitality. Furthermore, strengths appear to have a preventive mechanism in that they serve as a shield against certain types of physical dysfunctions such as allergies, diabetes, chronic pain, and even certain cerebral dysfunctions. Additionally, strengths can help build psychological resilience. The use of signature strengths in work, love, play, and parenting generates positive emotions. Finally, the strengths-based approach is considered central to effective psychological therapies and coaching.
